The world of fabric is an exciting, inspiring and creative one that thrives on innovative designers who create beautifully crafted works of art that use fabrics as their canvas. A few such designers practice their art at one of our favorite fabric companies out there, Cotton + Steel! Cotton + Steel is a funky, collaborative and fun extension of RJR Fabrics dreamt up and brought to life by Melody Miller. After crafting a business email to the CEO of RJR Fabrics, Melody was invited to give a presentation on this new and eclectic brand she hoped to start. An important tenet was collaboration, which is why Melody wanted to bring on five talented designers to make the famous designs we know and love. And thus, Cotton + Steel was born.

Cotton + Steel wouldn’t be the brand it is today without its incredibly imaginative team of designers who collaborate to curate unique collections and designs that we can’t get enough of! The team is made up of Melody Miller, Rashida Coleman-Hale, Alexia Marcelle Abegg, Sarah Watts and Kimberly Kight.

A South Carolina native, Melody moved to New York City to study industrial design at the Pratt Institute, which is where she honed her incredible design skills. Her whimsical designs and vibrant color palettes embody this creative designer’s style perfectly.

Rashida is a born maker who found her passion in the fashion industry while studying at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. After a brief hiatus, she rekindled her love of design and started a sewing blog to chronicle her creative adventures. This author and designer’s creations are inspired by her time in Japan, which is reflected in her simplistic and modern designs.

Alexia grew up in a creative household with her painter father and fashion designer mother, so it’s no surprise she ended up a creative herself. She tried her hand in photography, acting, fashion design and a plethora of other arts before settling into the sewing world. She’s now known for her hand painted, watercolor designs and funky aesthetic.

Sarah’s nomadic childhood gave her all the inspiration she needed to create the unique designs you see today while her time at Ringling College of Art and Design allowed her to become a talented illustrator. You’ll see her skills put to use in her detailed, hand drawn designs.

After being laid off, Kimberly began sewing and became interested in fabric, which lead to her creating a sewing blog. An avid vintage fabric collector, Kimberly is passionate about recreating and reimagining these prints to share with new generations, which comes through in her designs.

Despite having five different designers with different backgrounds and styles, Cotton + Steel is able to seamlessly bring them together in their world famous collections. We are obsessed with their collaborations with Rifle Paper Company, from Les Fleur to the latest Menagerie Collection.
