Q&A

In this exclusive Q&A, we had a chance to ask Justina about the inspiration for her latest fabric collection, her personal style, what's coming up next and more!

When did you realize you had a passion for art and design?

Ever since I was a child I was very art and design oriented. I loved to paint, sew and collage. After studying art in college I moved to Italy and began to think about design as a way to make a living using my creative talents. I opened a small boutique for vintage and new-designer clothing and I found that after a few years, I was most excited about the finding vintage objects and furniture for the shop. It was then that I realized my passion for decor and began working on home decor projects.

I originally began blogging as a way to do something creative everyday. I loved blogging right away as it was a natural way to combine so many of the things that I love including writing, photography, graphic design, crafting, styling, collaging, curating and decorating. Now, my blog is truly an extension of myself. I blog about all the things that I love--my family, my jungalow, my closet, my obsession will plants and global textiles, wild patterns, thrifted finds and bohemian dwellings.

You teamed up with Valdese Weavers to create your line of textiles. What about Valdese made them the perfect partner for this project?

Pretty much everything! Valdese weavers weaves the fabric here in the U.S. at their mill in North Carolina so I get to visit the mill and watch the process of my yarns being dyed and my fabrics being woven. I get to work closely with their (AMAZING!) design team and add textures to my patterns that give them so much movement and life. It is a dream collaboration for me because of their wonderful team and extremely sophisticated capabilities.

If you had to choose one favorite fabric from your entire collection, what would it be, and why?

Oh that's so, so hard. I think right now Rainforest is probably my favorite. Seeing that watercolor pattern come alive as a jaquard textile was SO much fun.

What are your current favorite trends in home décor?

Um, PLANTS! Although I don't think of it as a trend--more as a staple.

What do you love most about creating a DIY project with your fabric (or seeing customers creating DIY projects with your fabric)?

For years now, my favorite thing about my job as both a designer and blogger is helping others ignite their own creativity. Seeing people use my fabrics in such creative, fun and beautiful ways really feeds my soul.

What other blogs/brands/designers inspire you most?

I look at designers like Kelly Wearstler and Jonathan Adler, and aspire to build something similar for myself -- a brand that provides both services and beautiful, well made products to the masses. My hope is to help people bring more color, pattern, plants and creativity into their lives and make their lives better (even in my small way) in the process. I also look towards brands like Tom's Shoes and Warby Parker, who have amazing 'social good' components to their businesses and I aspire to that paradigm as well.

What’s coming up for you in 2018? What’s next?

Lots more color, pattern and plants! We've just launched our first kid's collection with Pottery Barn Kids and I'm very focused on growing our online boutique (maybe there's a brick and mortar in our future too? Who knows?)

What do you love to do when you aren’t designing and creating?

I love to hang out with my daughter, Ida (and my husband too!). Ida started kindergarten this year and we have a lot of fun doing arts and crafts, traveling, cooking and going on bike rides together.
