Hey there fall lovers! It’s been a really mild (meaning hot) fall this year here in Southern California where I am. The trees are still green being that they are palm trees, but I’ve seen a few trees with their leaves changing colors and it’s beautiful!
The fall block party colors were so inspiring that even after I had decided on which Liberty Fabrics print to focus on, I couldn’t help but create a block with some of the amazing Kona Cotton solids as well. So, I will share a few color ways with you for inspiration!
You might not be a fan of applique, but fear not! These Gather blocks can be sewn onto the background fabric by machine too. I used clear monofilament on this block so that the colors of the individual pentagons would still stand out and the color of the stitching would be minimal.
I used the following Kona Cotton Solids for the first version of this block I created:
- Kona Cotton Avocado
- Kona Cotton Bonsai
- Kona Cotton Olive
- Kona Cotton Curry
- Kona Cotton Amber
- Kona Cotton Cedar
- Kona Cotton Sienna
- Kona Cotton Paprika
- Kona Cotton Crimson
- Kona Cotton Garnet
- Kona Cotton Eggshell

*Note: This pattern is for an experienced beginner and assumes you know how to whip stitch and applique.
The possibilities for this pattern are endless! I even made a placemat by just making the background piece a little wider on the sides and quilted it with big stitches using Perle cotton size 8 in Ecru for a subtle effect! One of my practice blocks also become a mug rug that I did some improv quilting on (matchstick quilting lines mixed with lines spaced 1/2" apart). I love how both turned out!
Liberty of London Fabric Option
If you are a huge fan of Liberty Fabrics like me, this will be a really fun option for you to try!
This amazing Liberty Fabrics Tresco Lawn in cream/multi stood out in particular. It had all of the fall colors mixed in and I couldn't take my eyes off of it!
Here is my Liberty of London Gather block appliqued onto Cotton + Steel Sprinkle in Alexa Turquoise.
