Sewing is truly an art, and as the artists say, you’re only as good as your tools. If you’re hoping to create a masterpiece, you need quality tools to help get you there. In the sewing world, this means a fully stocked basket of sewing accessories. Whether you’re a novice sewist or a pro looking to simplify your craft, we’ve got a few tips on the best tools to use.
Believe it or not, sewing accessories haven’t always been around; they were a result of seamstress’ trying to simplify their trade. And so with the invention of the sewing machine came other tools to help make sewing less cumbersome. These handy tools were created with sewists in mind, to address well known problems and some you may not even have encountered yet!
1. Needle Threader
Even the most experienced sewists fumble with threading a needle from time to time, which is why there is a multitude of threading tools meant to make this an easy process. Desk needle threaders tend to be the most effective as you simply drop your needle in (any size except tiny quilt petites), rest your thread in the slot and press the button. The Clover Ultimate Needle Threader is our favorite and, quite honestly, a must-have for anyone looking to simplify the needle threading process.
2. Frixion Pens
These clever pens have a huge following and, if you’ve ever used one, you’ll understand why. They can draw on both fabric and paper patterns and they utilize a gel that erases with heat. Simply draw out what you need and then iron away the evidence! If you’re going to go this route, we suggest the Pilot FriXion Ball Erasable Gel Pens as they’re easy to use and get the job done.
3. Pattern Weights
Ever try to cut a pattern from a delicate fabric only to realize that the pins snagged the fabric? Us too! Pattern weights are great as they allow you to cut patterns without the pins. We highly recommend these Dritz Pattern Weights if you use patterns often.
4. Acrylic Ruler
Straight and accurate cuts are crucial parts of any project, but they can also be hard to achieve. Acrylic rulers make this easy, especially when used with a rotary cutter and cutting mat. Our personal favorite ruler is the O’lipfa Ruler with Lip Edge as its size (5” x 24”) makes long cuts possible and it features a unique lip edge that keeps the ruler straight on the edge of the mat.
5. Seam ripper
Ripping seams can be quite frustrating and time consuming, which is why a good seam ripper made our list of must-haves. Tula Pink's Surgical Seam Ripper is a popular choice amongst sewists as it features a sharp blade instead of the normal tip and is a quick way to rip out stitches.
This seam ripper is part of the overall Tula Pink Limited Edition Tools line, which also includes shears, micro-tip scissors, and a number of other tools designed to provide utility and style. The gorgeous coloring on these stainless steel Tula Pink products provides second to none style for your sewing room.
If you thought that all you needed to accomplish your goal was your sewing machine, then you have been missing out! Having the right sewing accessories can reduce headaches and encourage you to pick up those projects you have been putting off. Plus, these products make wonderful gifts for someone new to the craft, making it easy to pass your love for sewing on to someone else!
