NFL Pet Bandana & Blanket Tutorial

Football season is right around the corner, so it's time to start creating projects that show your team spirit!

Today we'll show you how to make a reversible bandana and fleece blanket for your pet so they can sport your favorite team's colors! One of our resident fabric.com pups, Buddy, is sporting Dallas Cowboys spirit, but you can browse all of your favorite team's fabric in our Team Shop by clicking here.

Reversible Bandana Project

These bandanas are reversible, so you can even showcase two different teams if you'd like! Best of all, the bandana slips right onto your pet's collar. We decided to use two coordinating broadcloth fabrics featuring the same team for our bandana.

Supplies Needed:

Instructions

We are using the measurements from Buddy’s collar and neck. Use your own pet’s measurements in the parentheses for a custom sized bandana.

Measure your pet’s collar – the width of it at the widest part. Remember to allow for buckles and other hardware if they add to the width. We are using 1” for Buddy’s – add a ½” for allowance.

Buddy’s collar and neck measure 19” around – you want the longest part of the bandana (the hypotenuse of the triangle) to be shorter than this measurement.

Use a ¼” seam allowance throughout.

Cut two squares “on point”, like so. We cut 12.5” squares.

Cut them in half for two triangles with the patterns facing the way the bandana will lie.

At the corners, cut in your width measurement +1/2”, for us – that’s (1.5”)

Your bandana triangles will look like this

Sew your bandana triangles together along the flat side with right sides together. Press seam open or to the darker fabric.

Take the remaining flat sides and turn under ¼” and then another ¼”. Edgestitch down, remembering the backstitch at the beginning and ends for durability.

Fold right sides together. Beginning at the flat opening, sew around the open sides, pivoting at the point for a sharp corner. Remember to leave the openings unstitched!

clip the point of the bandana like so...

Turn right side out through either opening. Topstitch along top edge, and (1.5”) down to create a channel across the bandana for the collar. You can also topstitch along the sides for a professional finish.

Feed the collar through the channel with your favorite side facing out. Now you are ready to cheer on your team!

Team Fleece & Minky Blanket

Now let's make an easy and super cozy fleece and Minky blanket for those chilly autumn games!

Supplies Needed:

You can sew this with a regular foot and needles, but it will be much easier with a walking foot and ball point needle since Minky is a tad stretchy and is prone to shift.

Instructions

Lay your Minky out on top of your fleece, right sides together. Trim the cut edges to match, and then trim the fleece width to match the minky width. Pin around the edges.

With a walking foot, ball point needle, and zig zag stitch, sew around the edges of the blanket at around 1” seam allowance, backstitching when you begin and end. Just make sure to keep an even seam allowance all the way around. Pivot at the corners with your needle down.

When you have about a foot left of space from where you started, end your stitching. Backstitch to anchor.
