Additional Pattern Pieces to Cut:
- Interior Pockets: 15” x 21” Main Fabric
- Straps: 25” x 2.75” (x4) Main Fabric
- Bottom: 21” x 8” (1x) Vinyl, (1x) Lining
Note: All Seam Allowances ½” unless otherwise noted.
Cut all your pattern pieces and interface cotton pieces.
With a ½” seam allowance, sew vinyl bottoms to cotton tops for bag front, back and sides.
Make Your Straps
With right sides together, sew two strap pieces along the long edges, leaving ends open. Turn right side out. Iron and topstitch. Repeat with second strap. Line the center of the strap with the center of the strap detailing, and clip in place. Topstitch around the edges.
Attach Your Straps
With erasable fabric pen or chalk, mark where to sew straps on the front of your bag as shown on your pattern piece. Sew around the vinyl base ¼”, and again to make straps stronger.
Sew in Your Zipper
Fold each zipper tab in half, wrong sides together. Attach zipper ends to folded edges and sew. Cut zipper piece in half, lengthwise. Sew the zipper in between your zipper band with your zipper foot (1/4”). Topstitch zipper and trim zipper tabs to even out your zipper band.
Sew each zipper band short edge to exterior sides.
Finish bag exterior
Sew center bag band to front and back, taking extra time to match vinyl bottom seams. Start and end seam 1/2” in and backstitch. This will help when attaching the bottom of the bag. Open the zipper – the top of the bag is where you will be able to turn your fabric right side out after attaching the bottom.
Attach the bottom
Line up your bag corners with bag bottom corners, and clip along all sides. When attaching bag bottom, sew to corner and pivot, flattening the seam as you go.
Make Bag Lining
To make your interior pockets, fold pocket piece in half, wrong sides together, making piece 7.5” x 21”. Iron and topstitch on the fold. Place raw edge of pocket bottom to raw edge of one lining body piece. Mark center and stitch through pocket and lining in the center.
As with the exterior zipper band, cut lining zipper band in half. Fold center in ½”, to make room for the zipper. Attach zipper band ends to bag sides. (Pictured is ¼” but ½” fold results in cleaner finish)
The same as sewing the exterior bag, sew the lining pieces together, and attach lining bottom.
Attaching Lining to Bag
With the bag exterior right sides out, insert the bag lining, wrong sides together. Line zipper exterior with zipper band interior and hand stitch closed.
