I got this so I would stop stepping on pins that have camouflaged themselves in my carpet. This thing is so powerful that you can hear the pins clink as it picks them up. Be careful with it next to electronics, and keep it apart from the rest of your sewing tools (it even sticks to my heavy gingher shears) and you'll be fine.

I have a telescoping magnetic wand for myself, which I like. However, the drawbacks on the telescoping kind are that the magnet is small and you can easily break them since the smallest segment is quite narrow. In fact, the first telescoping wand I had broke the very first time I tried to collapse it... but the local shop was kind enough to replace it for me and I am just super careful with it now. And the small magnet makes harder to "sweep" for unseen pins with it.
I purchased this Dritz wand for my husband's grandmother, who has advanced macular degeneration (low vision). We are constantly finding pins and needles in the carpet around her chair when we visit, because she can't see to pick them up. The larger magnet on this will be nice for allowing her to "sweep" for pins, however it would be nice if the handle were longer so that she didn't have to get so close to the floor.
Before taking it to her, I did have occasion to use it myself though. My husband knocked over a package that contained many tiny screws... this wand let me pick them all up very quickly thanks to the large magnetic surface. That isn't something I could have done with my little telescoping wand.
My only small complaints would be that 1) it would be nice if the handle was longer and possibly angled. 2) It is surprisingly heavy at the magnet end and therefore not well balanced.
I may have to purchase another one of these for myself, it would be nice to have around when I am searching for a pin that I just can't seem to spot.

I found this tool heavy and awkward to use. I think I would prefer a telescoping magnetic wand. Pins drop on the floor and using this just doesn't work. I realize I bought this knowing it wasn't telescoping, but it just is not practical as far as I am concerned.
