Makers Spotlight: Carissa from Scout Studios
My sewing career began when I was seven or eight when my grandmother, Allene, taught me how to thread my first needle. She taught me how to stich as well, which lead to me sewing and creating small pillows for my dolls!
I continue to sew to this day, pulling inspiration now from my travels. I love how different cultures use color! Whenever I return from my travels, I always come home with a fresh perspective and loads of ideas for my next project. Ideas vary based on my client and the project. I typically work with the client’s design plan and go from there.
If you’re looking to sew for clients or just getting started, I suggest planning everything out and measuring twice before cutting. Plan, plan, plan! While I don’t know a bunch of names for sewing techniques, I do know the best way to not break a needle: take the pins out of the fabric before sewing over them with your sewing machine!
When I am sewing, my favorite fabric to work with is velvet. I know it’s summer, but I’m all about velvet! There’s just something so rich and luxurious about it and I don’t see it going out of style anytime soon (especially pink velvet!). I definitely couldn’t live without velvet, or really any fabric. Great fabric is always where I start as it tends to be the inspiration for decorating a room.
