Makers Spotlight: Jes from Dot Dot Baby
When I was about nine, I started hand sewing and little bit of light machine sewing for my miniature doll house. Nowadays, I tend to pull my inspiration from other things such as the fabric designs themselves. I guess you could say I’m a textile addict! When I see a new print, my mind goes wild thinking of what I could pair it with and who I could gift it to.
A lot of what I make is baby centric or often made as a baby gift, so my favorite fabric is, of course, minky. Fabric.com has the best minky selection for soft baby blankets! Cute cotton prints make great burp cloths and bibs and faux fur makes for a truly unique gift! I also like using polysatin for silky ruffles on blankets and loveys. Most of my friends know someone who is expecting, so I typically plan my projects around personalized baby shower gifts that I can make with some of my favorite fabrics.
I couldn’t complete any of my handmade gifts or projects without my serger. It prevents the cotton from fraying inside the blanket, which makes it last so much longer. My serger also allows me to create all of my satin and cotton ruffles by simply adjusting the tension. When sewing, I love utilizing French seams. They’re much easier to do than they sound and give projects a nice, finished look.
If you’re new to sewing or want to get into it, start out simple and practice. Having quality tools will make all the difference, so I suggest investing in high-quality scissors, cutting mats, sewing machine and quality fabrics. Don’t give up!
