Sewist Spotlight

Makers Spotlight: Trish from Trish Stitched

As a 4’9” woman, I quickly became frustrated with clothes not fitting properly. So, I taught myself to sew at 16, starting first with my mom’s old Janome to create a small pouch with a hand-stitched buttonhole. Now that I have been sewing for a while, I can pull inspiration from all over, but I love “window shopping” on Pinterest and Instagram. I get inspired not only by the clothing I see, but also from seeing fabric and thinking to myself, “Oh, that would make a great top or dress!”

When sewing clothes, I love to work with knits. Now that I’ve taken the plunge into sewing with knits, they’ve become a favorite of mine. I also have a deep love of upholstery fabrics and always use cotton to create handbags. The weight and designs make for great bags! While I love making handbags, my next project typically comes to fruition after I see what’s in my wardrobe—I look for what needs to be replaced and what holes need to be filled. Basics will be huge for me over the next few years! Currently, however, I have quite a few black tie weddings to attend, so I am taking on that challenge.

Taking on new challenges requires all kinds of tools, but I couldn’t live without my seam ripper. However, I recently bought the “wonder clips” from Fabric.com and don’t know how I lasted so long without them!

If you’re looking to get into sewing or are a novice sewist, remember not to let failure discourage you. I often have to remind myself of this as even experienced sewists have bad makes. For example, my first finished garment was my senior prom dress, which required gathering. I had no idea what it meant to gather something, so my gathers turned into really ugly pleat-gathers! I didn’t give up and have now perfected this technique! Whenever a project frustrates me, I think back to the time before I started sewing and remember just how lucky I am to have started on this journey of creating a handmade wardrobe.
