- • 2 top blanket cuffs: 18" x 23"
- • 2 main blanket pieces: 36" x 23" (or 45" x 23" for an older child)
- • 2 lining blanket pieces: 36" x 23" (or 45" x 23" for an older child)
For Doll Version (15" or 18" dolls):
- • 2 top blanket cuffs: 7" x 8.75"
- • 2 main blanket pieces: 12" x 8.75"
Step 2: Once you have those pieces cut and ready, proceed to cut the tails on the fold.
Then, take your main blanket pieces and fold widthwise, right sides together. Place your cut out piece on the bottom edge - NOT on the fold side.
After all your pieces are cut, you should have this: (plus a second set of main blanket pieces for lining)
Step 3: With fabric right sides together, stitch your top blanket cuffs together at both short ends, creating a loop. Iron seams open and bring raw edges together, wrong sides together in a loop. Set aside.
Step 4: With fabric right sides together, stitch the main blanket pieces together at the long/curved sides. Press seams open (only if you are using quilting cotton).
Sew lining pieces right sides together and trim seam allowance to 1/4".
Step 5: Turn main blanket lining right side out, keep main blanket outer piece inside out and insert into lining. Baste lining and main fabric together along the top and bottom. Do not baste shut, but around, your blanket top and bottom will remain open. Basting helps keep these layers together.
Step 6: Sew Tail pieces right sides together, leaving top open. Clip seam allowance with pinking shears. Turn right side out and press (press only if using quilting cotton).
Step 7 (optional): Using a disappearing ink pen or chalk mark your tail to add decorative stitching, top stitch along the edges if desired. I chose decorative design # 81 on my Bernina 350PE since it looks good on both sides. Stitch your decorative design following the lines you drew.
Step 8: With main blanket piece inside out insert tail at the bottom, with all raw edges matching and right side of blanket touching tail. The tail will be sandwiched inside the bottom of the main blanket piece.
Step 9: Pin all layers of fabric together and sew. Finish with your serger or zig zag stitch if desired.
Step 10: Turn your tail right side out. Match the raw edges of your cuff/band piece to the raw edges of the top of the blanket, making sure side seams match. Pin and sew around the top. Finish with a serger or zig zag stitch.
Enjoy your mermaid tail! For a doll version, follow the same steps but omit lining if desired and finish raw sides with a serger instead.
