Sweet Sewing Shelves Applique Quilt Tutorial

Created by Flamingo Toes Blog

September is National Sewing Month! This sweet Sewing Shelves Applique Quilt is the perfect addition to your sewing studio, or as a gift for your favorite seamstress.

It's all decorated up with sewing room shelves that hold all kinds of fun things for your sewing room! A cute floral sewing machine, thread, fabric and even little flowers!

This quilt is perfect for a fat quarter bundle or even as a stash buster. Let's get started!

Project Prep

Cut out your white fabric and shelf pieces first. You'll need:

  • Out of white: 2 pieces 6" x 60" for side pieces
    • 2 pieces 2 1/2" x 12 3/4"
    • 2 pieces 2 1/2" x 4 1/2"
    • 1 piece 16 1/2" x 27 1/2" (for top shelf piece)
    • 2 pieces 15 1/2" x 27 1/2" (for middle and bottom shelf pieces)
    • 1 piece 6" x 27 1/2"
  • Fabric for shelves: 2 pieces 2 1/2" x 42"
    • 3 pieces 2 1/2" x 27 1/2"
  • Fabrics for bolts on lowest shelf - one from each fabric - 11" x 2"
    • 8 pieces 1 1/2" x 1" for bolt ends.

Print out your pattern pieces and decide what prints you'd like on each piece. Cut slightly larger pieces of fabric than each pattern and iron fusible webbing to the wrong side of the fabrics. Cut out each of the pattern pieces.

Sew each of the horizontal shelf pieces to the bottom sides of the white shelf pieces. For each shelf, lay out the applique pieces and fuse them in place. Trace your detail stitching in place on all the shelves.

Take each shelf and do any detail stitching first using free motion stitching. For example, the lines on the pincushion, the pins, the detailing on the lettering. Once you have all your detail stitching finished, zigzag all the applique pieces in place using a small zigzag stitch.

For the flowers, sew little free motion stitching lines in a star shape, then sew little circles at the end of each spoke.

Once you have your shelves all appliqued, assemble your quilt top. Sew each of the shelves together top to bottom. Under the lowest shelf, sew the 6" x 27 1/2" white rectangle. For each of the vertical shelves, sew a 2 1/2" x 12 3/4" white piece to one side and a 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" piece to the other side. Sew these strips on each side of the center shelves. Sew the 6" x 60" pieces on each side of the vertical shelves. Your quilt top is all finished!

Quilt and bind your quilt in whatever what you'd like. I straight stitched around all appliques and the shelving, and did a free motion meandering quilting in all the white spaces. Now you can show off your cute new sewing shelves quilt!
